Researchers Note: The headstone states the birth and death dates as 1829 and 1919, respectively. According to "Past and Present of Macomb County" by Robert Eldredge, the birth date for this veteran is January 5, 1829 (which agrees with the headstone) and, according to the State of Michigan death records, the date of death is August 29, 1918 (which does not agree with the headstone), aged 90 years, 7 months, 25 days. The age at enlistment as officially set forth in the "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865" would support a birth year of 1829. Based on this veteran's age at death, the years should be either 1828-1918 or 1829-1919. Unless family records can be found, the discrepancy in the years will remain unresolved.

Researchers Note: The action referred to on September 20, 1863, was the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia.

However, the cemetery headstone and the pension record lists this veteran's name as Devereaux. From affidavits submitted by this veteran (which are in the possession of the researchers) on behalf of other veterans, he spells his name as Devereaux.

Researchers Note: Enlisted in Company E, Thirty-seventh New York Infantry, as a Corporal on May 9, 1861, at New York City, age 22. Promoted to Sergeant, December 27, 1861. Mustered out at New York, New York on June 22, 1863.

From pension record, this veteran also served in Company A, Sixty-ninth New York Infantry, enlisting on February 29, 1864 at New York City, age 22. This enlistment was made under the name of Joseph Anson, which was used as an alias. The record also shows that Joseph Anson deserted on January 16, 1865.

Researchers Note: Military record lists this veteran's surname as Dussett. It also shows that he served in the Heavy Artillery. In July, 1863, General Banks converted this infantry unit into a Regiment of Heavy Artillery, on account of its valuable and faithful service, his official order stating that the Regiment is "to retain, until further official notice, its infantry number, and to have the organization pay, clothing and equipment as prescribed by regulations for troops of the artillery arm." The regiment is, therefore, frequently referred to as the Sixth Infantry and also the Sixth Heavy Artillery.

Researchers Note: This veteran was a prisoner of Andersonville Prison identified by prisoner code 52237. He survived Andersonville and was exchanged at Savannah, Georgia, November 14, 1864. No information available relative to his supposed stay at Libby Prison.
