Researchers Note: The headstone states the birth and death dates as 1829 and 1919, respectively. According to "Past and Present of Macomb County" by Robert Eldredge, the birth date for this veteran is January 5, 1829 (which agrees with the headstone) and, according to the State of Michigan death records, the date of death is August 29, 1918 (which does not agree with the headstone), aged 90 years, 7 months, 25 days. The age at enlistment as officially set forth in the "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War 1861-1865" would support a birth year of 1829. Based on this veteran's age at death, the years should be either 1828-1918 or 1829-1919. Unless family records can be found, the discrepancy in the years will remain unresolved. |
