Researchers Note: According to a special veteran census conducted in 1890, this veteran, John B. Trombley, 8th Michigan Cavalry, suffered from disease of the testicles and atrophy as a result of service in the Civil War. Researchers Note: The military headstone for this veteran, in the St. Peter's Cemetery, lists his service in Company D, 9th Michigan Cavalry. There was a John B. Trombley who served in this company, however, he is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe, Michigan. There is a military headstone to that effect in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Also his wife is buried next to him in that cemetery. This information has been confirmed through contact with the Monroe County Historical Society who has records of this cemetery. It would appear that the headstone in the St. Peter's Cemetery either was ordered wrong, or the inscription on the stone was in error, or the stone was delivered to the wrong place. Suffice it to say that the John B. Trombley buried in the St. Peter's Cemetery actually served in the 8th Michigan Cavalry regardless of the notation on his headstone. |
