Researchers Note: No headstone was found for this veteran, however, he does appear in an early reading of this cemetery and the headstone may have been broken, weathered, etc., since that reading. This reading indicated that this veteran died at Vicksburg, July 10, 1861, of wounds received in battle at Jackson, Mississippi, in July 1861, aged 22 yrs. Listed in the "Roll of Honor", which is a listing of Union soldiers who died while in service, is a Seth I. Wells (who we believe is Seth J. Wells) of Company G, 8th Illinois Infantry. The death of this veteran is listed as July 9, 1864. He is buried at the Vicksburg National Cemetery in Mississippi, section L, grave #104. According to the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database, this veteran "died 26 May 1864 of wounds recd at Jackson Miss". This database also lists his residence as Macomb, Michigan. Resolution of these discrepancies is beyond the scope of this study.

Researchers Note:  This veteran lived at the Michigan Soldiers' Home (File #3150) for some time.  In the file for this veteran, he states that he suffered a gunshot wound of right thigh and loss of left eye.  The 1883 Pensioners' Roll concurs with this statement.  However, in the 1890 Veterans' Census, no mention is made of these injuries.  The gunshot wound occurred at the Wilderness, May 4 or 5 of 1864.

Researchers Note:  An obituary for this veteran indicated that he died in Grand Rapids (probably the Michigan Soldiers' Home) and the remains were transported back to Mt. Clemens. Funeral services were to be held from St. Peter's Church and burial in Clinton Grove Cemetery.
